Why Purchase Real Estate In Kiln, Mississippi?
Kiln, MS History
The Kiln, Mississippi is a community located in Hancock County and is about 3 miles West of Diamondhead and only 10 miles North of the beautiful beaches in Waveland and Bay St. Louis which is the County Seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Kiln was estimated to be 2,238 in 2010.
Kiln was named after all of the large Kilns that were built to serve the thriving yellow pine timber industry. Many giant kilns were constructed for distilling turpentine, curing and drying lumber, pine tar production, as well as charcoal production. Kiln is located at the Jourdan River and was originally referred to as the Jordan community. The original settlers in this area were of French descent. St. Germaine was the original French name which designated the Jordan River.
In the late 19th Century, the Jourdan River had shipyards and the river provided water transportation access to the nearby Mississippi Gulf Coast ports that served the then booming yellow pine timber industry.
In 1914, the Jordan River Lumber Company was constructed which had a cutting capacity of staggering 150,000 board feet per day.
During the days of prohibition in the 1920’s, the transition from distilling turpentine to distilled alcohol was a logical and lucrative transition. At that time, Kiln was the bootlegging, rum running, and moonshine Capital of the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast. At the height of moonshine popularity in the late 1920’s, there were at least 50 moonshine stills operating in Kiln.
Kiln liquor had a reputation for high alcoholic proof and a brand name that lingers to this day is White Lightening.
The residents of Kiln have their own way of pronouncing names. The town of The Kiln is called The Kill.
The first recorded home and sawmill that was constructed at Kiln was established by Captain Sam Favre. Captain Favre was the ancestor of the famous NFL Quarterback, Brett Favre who grew up in Kiln.
Kiln is conveniently located and is only a one hour drive to New Orleans. And Kiln is only a 10-15 minute drive to the most beautiful sugar white sand beaches on the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast along with access to a vast array of terrific restaurants, outdoor attractions, and scenic byways and the excitement of two 24-hour non-stop casino resorts in nearby Bay St. Louis.
